Studio Assistant (0,4 fte)

to support the students and lecturers of the M.Sc. Digital Design.

Job description
We are seeking an enthusiastic Studio Assistant for the Master’s programme in Digital Design (MDD). The MDD is a studio-based education programme where students regularly work and learn in a shared space, the MDD studio. The Studio Assistant supports lecturers and students in their daily activities in the studio.
S/he recently graduated from a Master’s programme in design and can create a positive, productive and creative environment in a design studio. S/he has a strong affinity for digital design, and s/he can facilitate group work in an international and multicultural setting. S/he is at ease with videoconferencing such as Teams and can help students and staff as they work and learn online. S/he also has good communication skills and is able to document the creative process and presentations taking place at the design studio of the M.Sc. Digital Design through pictures, blogs, and videos.
This position is for 2 days/week (0,4 FTE). Due to exceptional circumstances due to COVID-19, we foresee that some studio activities will take place up to 22.30, and that the Studio Assistant will sometimes be scheduled to work in the evening.

The position could be extended in case other tasks become necessary, and can be combined with other positions in the AUAS.

Job description
The primary functions of the Studio Assistant in Digital Design are:

  • support the students and lecturers of the MDD in their daily activities in the design studio, for example by giving feedback and advice to teams;
  • support the students and lecturers with various online cooperation tools (e.g. streaming on MS Teams, online whiteboards such as Miro, …);
  • orient the students – especially the international ones – in the various procedures of the AUAS (printing, getting reimbursed for small expenses…) and of the MDD program (what is an assessment, what is a resit, how to read the competence matrix…);
  • inform prospective students (e.g. the applicants for the year 2021/22) about the activities of the MDD;
  • directing the students in keeping the MDD studio tidy and functional;
  • contributing to the public communications of the programme with regular blog posts on http://masterdigitaldesign.com, as well as facilitating students’ contributions;

We are seeking
The ideal Studio Assistant has recently graduated from a Master’s programme in design at the University of Applied Sciences. S/he is at ease working in interdisciplinary teams and with students from a variety of disciplinary/cultural backgrounds. S/he has a good understanding of what is necessary in a studio space, and s/he can explain the most common procedures & activities related to being a student in the Netherlands. The ability to effectively work/coach/teach in English is required.
This position can be held for only one year.

The degree programme
The Master in Digital Design programme brings together practice, research, and technological innovation. The 1-year full time curriculum combines a rigorous background in design research (‘Research through Design’, ‘Critical Making’) with real-world projects involving industry partners carried out in a studio setting. It is designed to challenge students, and prepare them for the real-life rhythms of design professionals. The programme centres around four main areas of expertise: Literacy, Research, Creation and Strategy. It is completely taught in English, to a multicultural cohort of 48 students. 
 The M.Sc. Digital Design is an initiative of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, in cooperation with eight leading Dutch digital agencies (BBDO Amsterdam, DDB Unlimited, Dept, Fabrique, MediaMonks, Mirabeau, Momkai, and Woedend!) and a network of key partners.

We are offering
The initial period of employment is one year with the possibility of an extension. The tasks belong to the job description of teacher / researcher 2 (docent / onderzoeker 2). The pay scale complies with pay scale 11 (CAO HBO labour agreement for universities of applied sciences). The minimum salary is € 3.658 and the maximum salary is € 5.026 for a full time position and depends on education and experience.

Lecturers must hold a teaching certificate, or must be willing to obtain one within a set period. The AUAS is willing to pay for the teaching certificate course.
